Every word counts

Could you be Stagetext’s Newest Trustee?

Call For Applications Now Closed

We’re looking for two new trustees to join Stagetext’s board and help us shape the future of our Charity as we navigate the new arts landscape.

The performing arts are currently grappling with profound changes, and the challenges we are facing will have long term consequences for audiences and venues. Over the last year we have been constantly adapting to meet new requirements for online access and are now planning for the return of in-venue events.

We want to make sure that we are best placed to deliver our work to support the sector in this changing cultural landscape, and we need the right trustees to help us lead the way.

We are committed to being a d/Deaf led organisation, and this is reflected in our Board. At the same time, we are actively looking to broaden our Board’s profile. We are keen to hear from people from culturally diverse backgrounds, those who have been traditionally underrepresented in governance, from d/Deaf and disabled people, those with lived experience of deafness, and above all, curious people who connect strongly with our values and mission.

About Stagetext:

As the leading provider of captioning and live subtitling to the arts, we work with theatres and cultural venues across the UK to make their work accessible to d/Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing audiences.

After 20 successful years, Stagetext is looking to the future and considering how to best meet its charitable aims in the light of accelerating changes in technology, the economics of the cultural sector and a genuine aspiration to widen participation and access. Stagetext is looking forward to its next stage of development, and we are now looking for a number of new Board members to help us achieve our goals over the next three years.

The Role:

At this time, we are particularly interested to hear from you if you have skills and experience in HR, fundraising, research, advocacy, and if you’re a theatre practitioner.

You don’t need to have previous board experience (although if you do, that would be great too), and we’ll work with you to become an effective member of the team that provides overall strategy and direction to the company, and works closely with our Chief Executive Officer, Melanie Sharpe.

As Stagetext is a limited company by guarantee and a registered charity, members of the Board of Directors are also Trustees of the charity.

Our office is in London, and board meetings have previously taken place in Central London. However, we are very open to continuing to meet both online as well as in person; a speech-to-text reporter is present at all meetings. You can be based anywhere in the UK. This is a voluntary, unpaid role.

How to Apply & Important Dates:

To start the conversation, we are asking you to send us an expression of interest. You can send a letter of no more than two pages.

Please make sure you tell us:

a. Why you would like to join the Board.

b. What you think you would bring to the organisation and how your skills could support the Board and team in achieving its vision.

c. A bit about yourself; the work you do and your previous experience.

You can download the full recruitment pack by clicking here.

You need to send your expression of interest to melanie@stagetext.org by the deadline of 5pm on Friday 9 April 2021, along with a completed Equal Opportunities Form.

If you wish to have an informal chat with our CEO, Melanie Sharpe, about this position before you apply please send an email to melanie@stagetext.org.

We are planning to have interviews Tuesday 20 & Wednesday 21 April; when you contact us, please let us know if you are not free on these dates.
