Become a Caption Hero this Captioning Awareness Week

Caption Awareness Week is an annual event which raises awareness of captioning, and live subtitling. Captioning gives deaf, deafened and hard of hearing audiences equal access to arts events such as theatre plays, musicals, museum talks, tours and literary festivals. In 2017 Caption Awareness Week will take place from 6 – 11 November and the campaign has a ‘superhero’ theme – ‘Be a Caption Hero’.

The campaign aims to reach the 11 million people in the UK who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing – that’s 1 in 6 – and show how accessible the arts can be through captioning and live subtitles.

We all know someone who may have some form of hearing loss and at this year’s event we’re asking those who may already be aware of Stagetext to pass on the message in any way they can.

Some of the 18 venues with captioned events this year include: Dominion Theatre, National Theatre, Birmingham Hippodrome, Harold Pinter Theatre, Storyhouse Chester, and Sheffield Theatres.

Take a family member or friend along to an events during the week and become a Caption Hero or take part in one of the many other activities during the week, including competitions and offers for theatres.

The campaign aims highlights how simple acts can go a long way in helping promote access within theatres, museums, galleries and other arts venues.
