Every word counts

Technician training

Stagetext’s captioning equipment is very easy to set up, however theatre technicians will benefit from a short training session prior to using it for the first time.  We aim to make this session as practical and as hands-on as possible.  Our technician training takes 3 hours and covers the following learning outcomes:

Understanding why captioning is important

  • How the process works
  • Who it is useful to and why
  • How a hearing loop and BSL interpretation does not provide full theatre access for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing audience members.

Rigging the caption units

  • Knowledge of unit specifications
  • Appropriate cabling including use of tie lines
  • Use of tripods, steels & clamps
  • Setting up and looking after a captioning laptop
  • Running a test to the units using the software
  • Troubleshooting in the event of failure to display text

Good unit position

  • Ease of access for deaf audience
  • Working with existing set and equipment - ie sound and lighting
  • Health and safety

Supporting captioners

  • Finding good positions for script checks and for captioners during captioned shows
  • Recording a DVD for captioning preparation
  • Enabling captioners to liaise with the Stage Manager/Deputy Stage Manager in order to check any queries on the script (amendments, deletions, sound effects etc)
  • Liaising with the production team and front of house before the captioned performance to alert them to any special announcements and actor changes.

Stagetext is happy to visit your theatre at a time convenient to you.  It can be very helpful to deliver this session in the auditorium itself so that different rigging positions for the unit can be discussed in situ.  Different captioning responsibilities can be taken on by technical managers, electricians, sound departments, carpenters and stage management so it’s a good idea to get as many of your technical staff at this training session as possible.

The current cost for this training session is £150 plus trainer expenses, plus VAT. Alternatively, you can contact Olivia, our Theatre Programme Manager for a quote.
