Our Impact in 2024/25

We’re proud to share what we achieved together this year, to make arts and culture accessible to the 18 million people in the UK who are deaf, deafened and hard of hearing.

We made 1,138 performances, talks, tours and films accessible. We worked directly with 186 cultural venues and organisations and trained cultural professionals from a further 264 organisations on deaf awareness or creating accessible events.

Our work is expanding across the UK too, with captioned and live-subtitled events and other services increasing by 16% in the South East.

Across 2025, we've made 1,138 performances, talks, tours and films accessible through captions and live subtitles. That's roughly 3 every single day.

Theatre captioning

In 2024_5 we captioned 436 theatre shows and all of these were captioned in person. From Shakespeare to musicals, from classics to tragicomedy – if it’s spoken, we make it accessible.

  • We provided captioning for a wide range of theatre productions from Stranger Things, Grapes of Wrath, Grease, The Flea, Dear England, Calendar Girls, Romeo and Juliet and many others
  • These took place at 143 different venues nationwide, from the Wolverhampton Grand, to the Phoenix Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe in London, as well as the Regent Theatre in Ipswich and Theatre Royal Newcastle, reflecting our work all over the UK
  • 121 captioned shows were staged by touring companies
  • Nearly half of all performances (45%) took place outside London, a 5% increase.

"Thanks so much for a great service last Friday night. It was the first captioned performance of our pantomime ever, so we are thrilled!" Everyman Theatre.

Live subtitles for talks, comedy and events

We live-subtitled 631 talks and conferences for 75 organisations. From museum tours to literary festivals, from Pride celebrations to stand up comedy we’re making the spoken word accessible.

This included:

  • 118 museum events at venues including National Museums Scotland, Leeds Museum, and The British Museum
  • 158 conference talks for organisations like Collections Trust, The British Academy, and Clore Leadership
  • Literary festivals including Bury St Edmunds, Edinburgh International Book Festival, Huddersfield, and Write Idea
  • Film screenings and Q&As with BAFTA, British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust, Everyman Bath and more
  • Gallery events at the National Gallery, LUX, and Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts.
"I really find that the captions help me focus, and that they 'anchor' what is being said, as well as help with absorbing and memorising the information." Professor of Media Accessibility and Audiovisual Translation

Supporting the sector

We’ve worked with:

  • 141 of the UK’s leading arts organisations
  • 24 Levelling Up for Culture Places (LUCPs), 4 of which were in the South East
  • We advocate for quality deaf access, from national venues to local community arts projects.
