We can now offer up to 50% off our digital subtitling service

Thanks to the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, we are now able offer subsidies for small and community led arts and culture organisations to subtitle their digital work.

The grant, distributed by the National Lottery Community Fund, means we can offer up to 50% off subtitling pre-recorded videos, including short social media videos through to whole theatre productions released online.

Since the beginning of lockdown, theatres, museums and galleries, have been releasing more of their work digitally. With many venues unable to open their doors until 2021, the reliance on online videos to share work will continue, and we hope these subsidies will help to make lots more content accessible to the one in six of us who are d/Deaf, deafened or hard of hearing.


What subsidies are available?

We’re offering to cover up to 50% off the cost of d/Deaf accessible burnt-in subtitles (these are subtitles embedded into your video so they are always visible, this is always the best type of access), this can give you a saving of up to £300.

The cost is based on the length of your video, so the total discount will be calculated on a case-by-case basis.

We have a limited pot of money available to offer these subsidies, and we will try to offer them to as diverse a range of organisations as we can. The subsidies will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis – so please get in touch!

Who is eligible?

The funding is specifically for smaller, community led, volunteer run, and diverse arts and culture organisations, who may not otherwise be able to afford to subtitle their work.

We can offer subsidies for all kinds of arts and culture content. If you have short promo clips for social media, or pre-recorded interviews you’re uploading to YouTube, or if you’re looking to upload a whole theatrical production online, we may be able to help you out.

If you work for a museum, gallery, theatre, or as an individual artist and could benefit from a subsidy, we’d love to hear from you.

How do I get the subsidy?

If you have some digital content that fits the bill, simply email [email protected] with the subject line “Subtitle Subsidies – [Your Organisation Name]”, including the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your organisation name and website
  • Your contact details
  • Details of the video you’d like to be subtitled, including brief overview of content and the length.

Then our Programme Systems Manager, Oliver Webster, will contact you about what subsidy we may be able to offer.

If you are eligible for a subsidy we will also be asking for a breakdown of your viewing figures once the project is complete, we can discuss this with you further when you apply.


Are you a subtitle user?

If you use subtitles but have seen videos or productions that are not accessible we’d also love to hear from you. You can nominate arts organisations that you would like to see being more accessible and we can contact them on your behalf.

We’ll let them know about the available grants and that there are users out there waiting to watch their videos.
