It’s a wrap! Highlights from Captioning Awareness Week 2023

What a fantastic week Captioning Awareness Week 2023 was! Here are some of the highlights of the campaign during 13 – 19 November.

This year’s Captioning Awareness week 2023 was launched with an announcement about the findings from our new research on subtitle and caption use in the UK. The research was conducted by the Audience Agency on behalf of Stagetext, and shows that 42% of people questioned said they use subtitles or captions to help with concentration and almost a quarter (24%) of all respondents said they used captions or subtitles at live events. You can read more about the research here

We also held two important key events in our new home in Colchester – we welcomed guests from across the region to a networking drinks reception to learn more about deaf access, and we had the honour of live subtitling The Big Festive Switch On and parade in Colchester, in what is thought to be the first of its kind for the eastern region. You can listen to the reactions of residents Shanalie Dias and Jayne Hudd and read more about the event here.

To finish off the week, we also offered a free webinar, “Subtitling in Online Spaces for Arts, Culture and Heritage” with our resident experts Oliver Webster, Head of services and System and Courtney Rudge, Live Subtitling Programme Manager. Those who attended were given insight into how to create quality subtitles and the importance of deaf access.

Every year we are warmed by the kind words from supporters and venues alike. Here’s a big thank you from us to you and to everyone who made these events possible. But most importantly, a big thank you to everyone who continues to support Stagetext during this week and throughout the year – without you our work would not be possible.
