Synopsis:

The Heritage Compass Symposium 2023 will take virtually on Thursday 18th January 2024 from 10.00 – 15.30.

The Heritage Compass Online Symposium is a final celebration of the Heritage Compass programme, where all participating organisations will come together. This will be a fantastic opportunity for us to collectively reflect on the journey’s taken and look to the future of Heritage in England.

Throughout this event, we will:

Reflect on the programme and the journey of participants
Share key learnings and best practice within the sector to help us move forward
Engage and network with other organisations from across the English heritage sector
Look to the future of Heritage in light of the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s new strategy and how organisations might best respond

We’re delighted to present this symposium alongside our partners at the Arts Marketing Association and Creative United, with thanks to support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Opening Session – 10am to 10.30am
Michelle Wright (CEO & Founder Cause4) will welcome you to the Heritage Compass Symposium and reflect on Heritage Compass Programme since it first started, addressing key questions, including why we started Heritage Compass and what we’ve learnt so far?

Programme Reflections on Building Resilience – 10.30am to 11am
This session, led by DHA Communications, will explore key learnings taken from the Programme’s evaluation and identify what is needed for long-term resilience, looking at common concepts, factors and resources.

BREAK – 11am to 11.15am

Championing Digital for Audience Engagement – 11.15am to 12pm
With an increase in the use of digital, it is important to ensure the heritage sector remains focused on inclusion and access. In this panel discussion, led by the Arts Marketing Association, we will look to address the question: How can we champion digital to ensure accessibility and reduce barriers to participation?

Contributing to Local Economies – 11.15am to 12pm
Organisational resilience and sustainability is crucial to the long-term success of England’s Heritage sector. In this panel discussion, led by Creative United, we will look to address the question: How can we ensure our work contributes to local economies through business partnerships; apprenticeships; employment schemes; volunteering and tourism?

LUNCH – 12pm to 1pm

Envisioning the Future of Heritage – 1pm to 2pm
This panel discussion will bring together experts from across the sector and look at the future of Heritage in England by focusing on what the next 10 years will look like. Gain insights which may inspire you to think more widely about the future of your organisation and how you can ensure long-term resilience.

BREAK – 2pm to 2.15pm

What We Need Next – 2.15pm to 3.15pm
During this facilitated round-table discussion, we will work together to identify a way forward for England’s heritage sector, asking the key question – What do we need next? Each group will be led by a sector expert, who will ask exploratory questions to encourage discussion and debate, with results collated into a final Heritage Compass report for the sector and our funders.

Closing Session – 3.15pm to 3.30pm
Michelle Wright (CEO & Founder Cause4) will wrap up the event.
