Political philosopher Erica Benner has this year added to her previous books on Machiavelli’s ideas and the history of nationalist thinking with a new title on a subject she’s been grappling with all of her life. In Adventures in Democracy, she explores the 2,500-year history of the concept, looks at the system’s flaws as well as its benefits, and asks how it can be done better.
