Curator’s Introduction: Paula Rego: Crivelli’s Garden image
Synopsis:

Join curator Priyesh Mistry, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Projects, for an introduction the acclaimed free exhibition, ‘Paula Rego: Crivelli’s Garden’.

Thirty years ago, Dame Paula Rego (1935–2022), Associate Artist (1990–2),was commissioned to create a mural for the National Gallery. The result, ‘Crivelli’s Garden’, took its inspiration from an altarpiece by the15th-century Italian artist Carlo Crivelli, to tell the story of women from biblical history and folklore based on paintings in the collection and stories from the Golden Legend.

Priyesh will explore the connections between these two works of art, as well as Rego’s depictions of courageous and strong women who were based on people she knew, including friends, family and members of the National Gallery staff at the time.
