Do you remember how you first found your passion for books?
Book illustrations jump into our imaginations as young children – bringing stories to life on the page and in our minds. Images of the Gruffalo, Winnie-the-Pooh and the Tiger Who Came to Tea live in our hearts and ignite our life-long love affairs with books.
Research from the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education shows that engaging children with book illustration supports them to develop sophisticated reading skills and become stronger independent writers.
At this event we will delve into the evidence on the vital role of illustration in engaging children with books and provide accessible, ready-to-teach activities from children’s book illustrators and authors.

Charlotte developed and leads the CLPE’s ground breaking Power of Pictures research, investigating the impact visual literacy and illustration can have on children’s reading and writing.
Yu Rong, illustrator
Yu Rong is an acclaimed children’s picture book illustrator. She trained as a primary school teacher before becoming an artist. Her work combines traditional hand paper cuts with drawing.
Viviane Schwarz, writer and illustrator
Viviane creates picture books, graphic novels and games. She specialises in interactivity and encouraging creativity in a range of media.
