The Power of the Gaze image
Synopsis:

Learn about the long history and representations of people of African descent in Europe (African Europeans) from the 3rd to the 21st century, with Professor Olivette Otele of the University of Bristol.
From legendary soldiers such as Saint Maurice, Septimius Severus and the Chevalier de Saint Georges, to Dürer and Gericault’s female models, this talk explores the question of the gaze and how it shaped our collective perceptions and identities.
This is a live stream of a talk taking place in the Sainsbury Wing Theatre. If you would prefer to attend the talk in-person, at the Gallery, please book separate tickets here.
