Speakers: Dr Tobias Capwell, Curator of Arms and Armour, The Wallace Collection, and Holger Schuckelt, Curator of Armour, Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen, Dresden
Description: Anton Peffenhauser (1525-1603) was one of the most important armourers active in the great armour-making city of Augsburg throughout the second half of the sixteenth century. Active for more than fifty years, Peffenhauser must have enjoyed one of the longest working lifetimes of all Renaissance armourers.
An astute businessman as well as a skilled craftsman, Peffenhauser led a large workshop with an almost unparalleled output, with scores of his armours preserved today in museums around the world. The Wallace Collection alone includes seven complete Peffenhauser armours, for the joust and tourney, as well as numerous other armour parts.
His extraordinary achievements will be discussed by leading Peffenhauser expert Holger Schuckelt of the Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen (State Art Museums), Dresden and Tobias Capwell, Curator of Arms and Armour at the Wallace Collection.
