LGBT+ History Month Launch Event image
Synopsis:

The National Gallery is pleased to welcome LGBT+ History Month for a celebratory event to launch its annual theme.

Founder of LGBT+ History Month Professor Emeritus Sue Sanders, Schools OUT UK Chair Lynne Nicholls, and LGBT+ History Month Patron Dan Vo introduce us to the five icons selected to represent this coming year’s subject, ‘Art and Politics – The Arc is Long’. The five faces are: Mark Aguhar, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Doris Brabham Hatt, Fiore de Henriquez and Keith Haring.

Sue, Lynne and Dan are joined in conversation with representatives from cultural organisations across the country on the theme, as they explore how these individuals embody its concept. We also explore works in the collection by Rosa Bonheur and Gwen John related to the theme.

Joining us are community friends commemorating three key milestones in 2022: the 50th anniversary of the first Pride march in Britain led by the Gay Liberation Front; the 50th birthday of LGBT+ mental health charity London Friend; and the 40th birthday of the Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK’s leading HIV and sexual health support charity.
