How can artists and cultural organisations forge their agency within the Metaverse, and how can a deeper understanding of their legal rights and responsibilities assist with this process?
The Metaverse – an always-online, persistent, spatial ‘second’ world and an emerging internet megastructure – is a landscape Serpentine Arts Technologies has been interrogating through artistic commissions and culturally-led research and development. Under the leadership of Serpentine Legal Lab’s Principal Investigator Alana Kushnir, legal issues in the Metaverse concerning intellectual property, moral rights and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property are ongoing areas of discussion for Serpentine Arts Technologies. The team believes that addressing these considerations is key to securing the future roles of both artists and cultural organisations in the Metaverse, and that these matters deserve the attention of all institutions.
Join Arts Technologies Research and Development Strategic Lead, Victoria Ivanova and Serpentine Legal Lab Principal Investigator and Director of Guest Work Agency Alana Kushnir for the first Legal Lab Live session as they walk through key legal definitions and pinch points associated with the entry of artists and cultural organisations into the Metaverse. What are the risks and opportunities, how can authorship and ownership rights be best negotiated, and how does this impact artistic practice within virtual spaces?
