Armour of the English Knight: Continental Armour in England 1435-1500

Join Dr Tobias Capwell FSA, armour historian and writer, as he reveals insights into his much-anticipated new book, Armour of the English Knight: Continental Armour in England 1435-1500. This is the third and final volume of his comprehensive exploration of the armour worn in England during the 15th century, the Hundred Years War, and the Wars of the Roses.
Drawing from his new book, Dr Capwell will present rare and important surviving examples of Italian and Flemish armour, alongside a wealth of sculptural, pictorial and documentary source material proving the presence and popularity of such equipment in England. He will show how medieval England was a kingdom engaged with its continental neighbours on many levels, promoting close economic, artistic, technological and military relationships.

About the Speaker: Dr Tobias Capwell was Curator of Arms and Armour at the Wallace Collection for 16 years. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a Freeman of the Armourers Company of London. He is the author of numerous books, including Armour of the English Knight 1450-1500 (2021), Arms and Armour of the Renaissance Joust (2020), and Masterpieces of European Arms and Armour at the Wallace Collection (2011). At the Wallace Collection he curated special exhibitions and displays, including The Lost King: Imagining Richard III. Dr Capwell can be seen regularly on screen, and was historical advisor for the new feature film The Lost King (Pathé, 2022).
