The British Museum Youth Collective have been working to unlock the museum for young people. This online in-conversation event will focus on museum careers, and the process of ‘breaking into’ the sector as a young person. The Collective will be joined by two speakers who will share their thoughts and their own experiences of starting out in museums and the arts:
Aksana Khan, Arts & Youth Engagement Producer and member of Museum Detox: a network for people of colour who work in museums, galleries, libraries, archives, and the heritage sector
Michelle McGrath, founder of Museum as Muck: an award-winning network of working class museum people working to effect change in the socio-economic diversity of the sector.
We will be covering topics such as: entry routes and barriers to entering the sector; getting into freelancing; learning to speak ‘museum code’ and feeling like you belong in a workplace where you’re in a minority; working out managers’ expectations of young people in the workplace; and dealing with feelings of intimidation or impostor syndrome.
This is a chance to ask questions and hear advice from people who have been through the process themselves. We will be inviting questions from the audience, both during the event and in advance. You can submit your questions before the event via the BM Young People Instagram account.
This online event is free to attend and will be hosted via Zoom.
This event will have live subtitles provided by Stagetext, delivered by MyClearText.
