This is a four-week course taking place on Zoom on Wednesday 23 June, Wednesday 30 June, Wednesday 7 July and Wednesday 14 July, all 17.30 – 19.00.

Join us to explore the formal innovations and aesthetic interventions generated by a body of work we might call ‘Black British literature’. Explore how a selection of writers have challenged existing literary forms – and created new ones – that express what it means to be Black and British. In addition to considering the aesthetic and linguistic strategies of Black writers in Britain, who are writing across a range of genres, styles and time periods, this course considers both the advantages and limitations of the term ‘Black British literature’ itself. Read fiction and poetry by Bernardine Evaristo, Jackie Kay, Linton Kwesi Johnson, George Lamming and more.

This course takes place on Zoom and we will email you a joining link the day before.

Each session consists of interactive activities and critical and creative discussion led by the tutors who are researchers in Black British writing, Dr Amber Lascelles and Dr Leighan Renaud. You have the chance to discuss the literature with one another in online breakout rooms and with the tutors.

This event will have live subtitles provided by Stagetext, delivered by MyClearText.
