Talk Online | Lubaina Himid In Conversation

Online | Lubaina Himid In Conversation

Synopsis

Join Lubaina Himid CBE and the RA’s Director of Collections and Learning, Rebecca Lyons, as they explore painting, people and activism in Himid’s practice.

In the first of our live online events this spring, we join Turner Prize-winning artist Lubaina Himid for a 60-minute discussion about her extensive career and engaging painting practice.

Over her 40-year career, Himid has sought to uncover marginalised and silenced histories, figures, and cultural moments. Working across painting, drawing, collage, print and installation, Himid encourages personal encounters with her artworks as well as reflecting on the connections to 18th and 19th-century British art, culture and society.
In this event, Himid joins the RA’s Director of Collections and Learning, Rebecca Lyons, to talk about her painting and use of materials and objects to develop a conversation with the audience, making visible narratives that might not otherwise be seen.

Lubaina Himid is a painter and curator who has exhibited widely across the UK and internationally. She was awarded the Turner Prize in 2017, made a CBE for services to art in 2018, and was elected as a Royal Academician in 2018.
Recently Himid’s paperworks for Naming the Money (2004), an installation made up of 100 life-size painted cut-out figures, have been given to the RA Collection as the artist’s Diploma Work. She is Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire and Professor of Painting at the RA Schools. Himid has a major solo exhibition at Tate Modern opening in November 2021.
