Following on from its successful season last year, the Open Air Theatre in London’s Regent’s Park are offering captioned performances for three plays this year: The Crucible by Arthur Miller; Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors; and the Stephen Sondheim musical Into The Woods. For those who haven’t been before, this is a wonderful opportunity to have a stroll in the park, enjoy a picnic and take in a captioned performance in this unique setting.
Captioned performances
The Crucible, Monday 7 June, 8pm
Set amid the Salem witch hunts, The Crucible, arguably Arthur Miller’s greatest play, sees a community divided by jealousy and superstition. As witchcraft hysteria takes hold, choices have to be made: conform to survive or uphold your beliefs whatever the consequences.
Directed by Artistic Director, Timothy Sheader, experience the breathtaking climax of The Crucible as the narrative darkens under the night sky. Patrick O’Kane and Oliver Ford-Davis will play John Proctor and Danforth respectively.
The Comedy of Errors, Monday 12 July, 8pm
In this merry-go-round of mistaken identity, two sets of estranged twins find themselves unwittingly wandering through the streets of the same town, where the men are jealous, the women are furious and there’s a priceless gold chain that everyone wants. As broken relationships are slowly pieced back together, order is restored and the final reunion is a heart-warming celebration of love and family.
Into the Woods, Saturday 4 September, 2.30pm
Into the Woods takes the stories of the Brothers Grimm and gives them a dark and humorous twist. The popular tales of Red Riding Hood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame), Cinderella and Rapunzel are interwoven with that of the Baker and his Wife and their quest to have children. However, this re-telling goes beyond ‘happily ever after’ as the familiar characters find themselves in unfamiliar circumstances and hopes and dreams are shattered.
Celebrating his 80th birthday in 2010, Stephen Sondheim is one of theatre’s most prolific composers, with recent productions of A Little Night Music, Sunday In The Park With George, and Tim Burton’s Oscar-winning version of Sweeney Todd increasing his popularity. Hannah Waddingham will take the role of The Witch, playing opposite Olivier award-winner Jenna Russell as the Baker’s Wife
