More and more theatres now have their own captioning equipment and Stagetext has trained local people or staff at the venue as captioners. This is obviously more cost-effective and means that the theatre can often afford to programme more captioned shows.
Around 40 theatres and production companies now have their own captioning equipment and trained captioners who have been through the Stagetext Certificate in Theatre Captioning for Deaf People. Others have purchased their own equipment but continue to use Stagetext captioners to deliver shows.

Stagetext launched a captioning service in Scotland in January 2006 and worked with eight theatres to programme captioned performances. The development of the service was made possible with a two-year grant from the Scottish Arts Council and the ADAPT Trust. The Gannochy Trust and the Hugh Fraser Foundation funded the purchase of captioning equipment and three local captioners were trained.
In December 2007, the Federation of Scottish Theatres took over the running of the service

The Northern Ireland Theatre Association (NITA) is improving access to theatres for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people through captioning and its services are available for use to all theatres and production companies within Northern Ireland.
Arts & Disability Ireland (ADI) is the sole provider of captioning services for live performance in the Republic of Ireland. At present they provide captioned performances at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, and Axis in Ballymun, and hope to continue to roll out the service nationally over the coming years.
