VocalEyes
VocalEyes is a nationwide company providing access to the best in the arts for blind and partially sighted people, mainly through audio description. This is a live commentary or explanation, capturing the visual elements of a theatre piece, painting, cultural site or environment. It is about enjoying a good quality experience and being able to share it with friends and family, something which others might take for granted. In March 2006 VocalEyes and STAGETEXT won a joint award of over £1million in order to extend access to the theatre for blind, partially-sighted, deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people. This funding has come from the Treasury’s Invest to Save Round 8, announced in the Chancellor’s Budget Statement, and is matched with an award under the Arts Council England Grants for the Arts. The ‘See A Voice’ project will result in an expansion in high quality provision of audio description and captioning around England over the next three years. Groups of theatres and venues will be invited to join together as local hubs to share equipment, training and marketing and to collaborate in making their work fully accessible to existing and new audiences in a more cost effective way than is currently possible.
